Who's the Biggest User? - FETC 2010

Cindy Lane and Lee Kolbert held a very informative and fun session at FETC called The Biggest User! In this session, Cindy and Lee took web 2.0 tools that are used in the classroom to explain them further, and to vote on which one will be provided in their “Biggest User” wiki. A few things that Cindy and Lee wanted us all to know (and what you should know) about all these tools discussed: they’re all free, they are able to work on both PC and Mac, and they are easy to use in all K-12 subject areas. I wanted to blog about this session because it’s always nice to have alternatives – so you pick which one you like best!

Multimedia Publish Platforms:

  • Cindy discussed Glogster. Not only is Glogster a fun word to say, but it is an easy and free way to share and express various media. With Glogster, you can add text (poems, jokes, letters, journals), images, music, or even video. You can share all your links with friends, add your creations to other platforms such as Facebook, and even find new friends on Glogster by their style.
  • Lee discussed what seemed to be a big topic at FETC, Voicethread. Similar to Glogster, you can share all your images, documents, and videos as well. In addition, Voicethread is a great way to start a conversation. One really cool thing about Voicethread, and that conversation starter they talk about, is how you can leave comments. There are 5 different ways – using your voice (mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (webcam) – then you can share it with others and add comments as well! You can also “doodle” on the actual media file – neat!

Wikis:

  • Cindy discussed using Google Sites to create a wiki for your school. With tons of templates to choose from, it’s easy to create a webpage, collect and add information all in one place, and control who can view and edit it. As it being a Google site, you will need a Google email address to set this one up!
  • Lee talked about Buzzword, which is actually apart of Adobe Acrobat. Buzzword is a “proven and robust online word processor” – where it’s easy to write reports, proposals, or anything else that you might need to put online. You can create print-perfect documents, share it with a number of contributors or non-contributors, and control it just the same as Google Sites.

Video Conferencing:

  • Cindy’s pick was one I’m familiar with – Skype. With Skype, you can make free calls over the internet to other people for as long as you like, and whenever you like. It’s THAT simple to explain.
  • Lee’s choice of Tokbox is as simple to use as Skype except there seems to be a little edge over Skype. You can share YouTube videos, Picasa and Flickr photo albums, SlideShare presentations or even collaborate on real-time documents together, all directly from their chat window.

Gotta Haves:

  • Cindy first discussed Printliminator. This is BY far one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Say you go to a website and you find a page you want to print. Aren’t you tired of all the stuff that comes on the print like ads, side links, etc? I just want the actual writing! Printliminator allows you to delete the stuff on the page you don’t want and only print what you need – you can remove graphics, elements, etc…saving time and lots of PAPER!
  • Lee’s “gotta have” is Rondee – a free conference call service that has web-scheduling AND attendance tracking. There is integration with Outlook and iCal, and you can additionally have up to 40 participants per call.

Make sure you stop by The Biggest User website! http://sites.google.com/site/thebiggestuser/

Have you used any of these resources before? How have they worked out for you?

I found this article is really useful for me in my job. Thanks for sharing this useful information.

I wrote a Glogster tutorial awhile back. Maybe you will find it useful! http://trunc.it/50e0g

Perfect! Thank you for the great link!

Hi!
Thank you so much for your kind review of our session. Cindy and I had a lot of fun with it and we're already submitting for FETC2011 with something along the lines of, "Biggest User II." Thanks again!

Oohhh Biggest User II?? AWESOME! Can't wait for FETC2011!

And thank YOU for a great session! I know a lot of people enjoyed it. :)

I think we are actually going to go with "Biggest User; Season II." Unconfirmed; you're the first to know. :)

My teachers who have used VoiceThread really like it. It's simple enough that even our primary grade students (K-2) can use it. Right now we have students discussing their connections to text, as well as doing book talks on it.

Glogster concerns me due the time that it takes, especially at the elementary level. While the final product is engaging, I'm just not sure that the time needed for a student to produce a product is best spent using Glogster. This is particularly an issue when a class only has access to the lab or laptops for one or two 45mn. sessions per week.

I wasn't familiar with Printliminator prior to reading this blog entry. It really does look spectacular. I'll have to share that with my teachers. Thanks for passing it on to your readers.

Hi Ann,

I understand your concern. Yes! Golgster can be very time consuming but sometimes it's worth going through the chaos. I teach 8th grade Spanish and I feel that most of my students have worked with something similar in the past.

I had my students create glogster about a "rubber duck" in Spanish. This allowed them to practice conjugating in the 3rd person. We took the photographs of the ducks well in advance and I saved them in the share folder. I assigned two days at the lab to create the poster (I really over planned with them since it only took them one day). I think things flowed easily because they had an exact task on mind and they went straight to work.

One of the things I love about Glogster is that if students do not finish they can save their progress and access it at a later time. Some of my 8th graders were so "hooked" with Glogster they finish the requirements during class and went home to embellish their Glogsters.

Another thing I love about Glogsters is their embedable capabilities. All of my students embeded their glogsters into their Nings. I do have a few GLogster samples on my webpage. http://www.wltechconsultants.com

I understand your concern especially since you are at the elementary level. Perhaps you could do it once or twice a year as a big project ?

Voicethread was definitely a hot topic. I've used it a time or two, but more so seen others use and love it.

As far as Glogster, I was asking Catalina below to share some ideas on how she incorporated it into the classroom so it's not so time consuming (since she's had success).

Printliminator is awesome! I know I will definitely be using that quite often.

Thank you so much for sharing, Ann! Hopefully we'll hear back from Catalina :)

I love the tools that were shared during this session.

My students have used Glogster in the past and they truly enjoy it. This year I found out that Glogster can be very rewarding especially for those students that are not creative otherwise. Glogster is so easy to use that anyone can be can create beautiful projects. One of my special education students was thrilled about his creation.

I was very happy to learn about the Printliminator ... This will help me save some paper and ink!

THANKS FOR SHARING!

Your students are middle school though, aren't they? I think the time on task for a middle school student with Glogster is going to be dramatically different than with an elementary student.

I completely agree with you!

Although Glogster is great and it provides many things I wan for my students to do it may not be suitable for little ones ...

I wonder if there is something similar out there but a little more simple. I will tweet about it ... and see what we get. Now I am curious ...

I wonder if we could get the Glogster folks to make a "Jr" version of it, for young children???

It really was a great session, wasn't it Catalina?

Maybe you can give Ann some tips (in the comment above) about easier ways to incorporate Glogster in your classroom or maybe provide her with some alternatives to Glogster that have been successful for you?

Thank YOU for sharing!
