Abcya Word Cloud Generator is especially great for kids.
I don’t know why I haven’t written about this nifty free tool before. Abcya has some great free games and useful classroom tools and their word cloud generator is one of my favorites.
A word cloud groups words onto a page based on their frequency. The more often a word appears in a list, the bigger it becomes in the word cloud that you generate.
Kids will love this because it makes it immediately clear which words they tend to use over and over again in a piece of writing.
You and your students can create word clouds, as long as you enter at least three words, right at the Abcya site. You can print the word clouds or save them as picture files. Abcya’s word cloud generator then lets you arrange the created cloud in a variety of ways by selecting from various options.
One teacher tip: I prefer to list all of my words in a Google or Word doc and them copy or paste them into Abcya. Then, if and when you want to make a change, just go back to your original document and do another copy and paste. (There’s no way to save your word list in the generator itself.)
One of our members wrote this about Abcya inside the Teacher Learning Community:
This website is a must for teachers in every elementary classroom. The games are the most educational, yet fun, of any website I have seen. The amazing part is that it is all still free. It is not a stagnant site either. I have seen new games added before the new school year begins for the last couple of years. Have fun exploring!
Couldn’t have said it better myself; Abcya’s word cloud generator is a gem.
