The Transformative Power of Education

The second annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival will be held on October 19–22 (2017) in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina. Please join the folks at the Pat Controy Literary Center as they celebrate Pat Conroy's legacy as student and teacher through this year’s festival theme of The Transformative Power of Education.

Extending the remarkable conversations and experiences which began at the Pat Conroy at 70 festival and birthday celebration in October 2015, the Pat Conroy Literary Festival will continue to honor the writing life of Pat Conroy (1945–2016) in his adopted hometown of Beaufort, South Carolina. As an annual event, the Conroy Festival will also expand the circle to include larger discussions of Southern literature, life, and culture.

The immersive multi-day gathering features writer panels and book signings, live dramatic performances, film screenings, receptions, readings, tours, exhibitions, and a series of instructive workshops for writers, all centered around the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Center for the Arts.

Each year the festival will highlight a different theme from Pat Conroy’s writing life. The 2017 festival theme, the Transformative Power of Education, is reflected in this year’s programs, recalling Pat Conroy’s lines from The Prince of Tides (spoken by Tom Wingo and reverberating in Pat’s lowcountry heart as well):

“There is no word in the language I revere more than ‘teacher.’ My heart sings when a kid refers to me as his teacher, and it always has. I’ve honored myself and the entire family of man by becoming a teacher.”–The Prince of Tides
