All teachers know that field trips can be incredible educational experiences for students, particularly those students with limited backgrounds. However, because of cost and logistics, field trips aren’t always feasible. Luckily, thanks to modern technology we can bring many of the same type of experiences to our students with virtual field trips!
Read on for the top reasons why you should embrace virtual field trips in your classroom…
1. Less paperwork
From getting initial approval from your administrators, to getting students to turn in permission slips – there is a ton of time consuming paperwork involved in a traditional field trip. Guess how much paperwork is required for a virtual field trip? NADA! A huge time saver and one of the many great things about exploring the world from the comfort of your classroom.
2. No chaperones required
Along the same lines as paperwork and permission forms, it can also be a challenge to get enough parent volunteers to chaperone your students while on a traditional field trip. Virtual field trips don’t have any similar restrictions, as your students will be taking part in them as part of the regular school day.
3. No travel necessary
Sitting on a bus with loud noisy kids for hours until you reach your intended destination… typically not the highlight of the traditional field trip. With a virtual field trip, your only travel time required is uploading your documents or heading over to the specified web URL.
4. Less time required
Even with endless resources at your fingertips, there is only so much time in each day and each school year. The extra time required for traditional field trips means time taken away from regular lesson plans. Virtual field trips require significantly less time, and therefore you’re able to expose your students to more experiences in this new modern approach to learning.
5. Includes all students
There are always going to be a couple of students who are unable to participate in a traditional field trip (due to monetary constraints, or another reason). Virtual field trips are more inclusive as no student is left out of the experience.
6. No limits to what you can explore
Previously, you were limited by your geographic location and what’s available within a specific range of your school. Not anymore! The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt to Scott’s Hut in Antarctica, it’s all available at your fingertips with virtual field trips.
Oh yeah… did we mention there are hundreds of virtual field trips available out there for FREE?! 🙂
