Are we obsessed with grading and the grading system?

I watch social media closely and it's my job to share some of the hot topics on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and other outlets that teachers, principals, students, and parents are contributing.

So what do you think? Is grading harming student learning because it puts too much emphasis on a letter grade and not on knowledge? Or is it vital to measure a student’s progress?
